Sunderland are preparing to welcome back one of their summer recruits from injury when they face Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend.
Le Bris looking forward to “exciting test” against Brighton
Few, even among the most hopeful Sunderland supporters, anticipated such an impressive start to life back in the Premier League. After investing heavily during the summer, the Black Cats have translated that spending into strong performances, highlighted by a memorable Tyne-Wear derby victory over Newcastle United in their last match.
Currently sitting eighth in the table and just two points off the top four, head coach Régis Le Bris described the upcoming clash with Brighton as another “exciting challenge.”
“They are a very strong team with lots of individual and collective strengths,” he said. “They are excellent on the ball, press well, and play with intensity, pace and power. It’s another exciting test for us.”
Le Bris also shared encouraging updates on squad fitness: “At the moment, we have no injuries, which is very positive, and I hope that continues during this period.
“The lineup will change slightly, but the players who haven’t had as many minutes knew this opportunity would come. They’ve trained well, stayed connected with the group, and now we’ll manage the match accordingly.”
That said, Sunderland will still be missing several players due to the Africa Cup of Nations. Reinildo, Noah Sadiki, Chemsdine Talbi and Artur Masuaku have all departed to represent their countries.
Habib Diarra will also soon leave for AFCON, but not before potentially featuring for Sunderland in the Premier League, providing a major boost for Le Bris.
Diarra “expected to feature” against Brighton
According to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, Diarra is expected to be involved in the Brighton match before joining Senegal for the tournament.
Le Bris confirmed that the club-record £27m signing could complete his rehabilitation this weekend. “Yes, he could be with us for Brighton, which would mark the end of his rehab,” he explained.
“If everything goes well, he’ll be able to join his national team. We’ve been in constant communication with them, and Habib needs to be ready for any situation.
“He won’t start against Brighton, but he’ll be on the bench. If he leaves after that knowing he could play important games, it shows he’s ready. We’re confident in him, for both the club and his country.
