The Toronto Blue Jays extended a qualifying offer to Bo Bichette this offseason, though it was widely assumed he wouldn’t take it. As the deadline neared, Bichette officially turned it down, making him free to sign with any club.
The Blue Jays should do everything possible to retain him. He was one of their standout players early in his career, but financial considerations often drive decisions in free agency. Fortunately for Toronto, they have the resources to bring him back if they choose to.
According to Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report, Bichette is projected to return to the Blue Jays on a seven-year contract worth $184 million. Miller added that if Bichette shifts from shortstop to second base, he might accept a slightly reduced offer—around seven years and $176 million—which would still make him the highest-paid second baseman in terms of total contract value and average annual salary, edging out Marcus Semien’s seven-year, $175 million deal. Either way, Bichette is poised for a massive payday, and staying in Toronto appears probable—unless the team lands Kyle Tucker first and can’t afford both stars.
The Blue Jays are expected to pursue Tucker with an offer in the $400 million range, but if they miss out on him, re-signing Bichette would be a logical fallback.
Bichette remains an excellent long-term fit alongside Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and together they could help lead Toronto back to the World Series in the coming years.
