Austin Reaves may not need to pack his bags and leave Los Angeles just yet.
According to Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times, the Lakers have shown “no interest” in moving Reaves unless they receive a “top-tier big man” in return. However, Woike notes that no current trade candidates quite meet that standard, although Brooklyn’s Nicolas Claxton and Dallas’ Daniel Gafford are mentioned as the closest options.
Reaves, 26, has been the center of numerous trade rumors following the Lakers’ first-round playoff exit at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves. With a relatively affordable $13.9 million salary next season (and a $14.9 million player option for 2026-27), Reaves is arguably the team’s most valuable trade chip, alongside rookie Dalton Knecht, a 2031 first-round pick, and some expiring deals.
Some analysts have cited a redundancy in offensive style between Reaves and dominant ball-handlers like LeBron James and Luka Dončić, while also pointing out the Lakers’ need for more size and roster balance. In fact, several prominent voices in the media have confidently predicted Reaves will be traded this offseason.
Still, there are solid arguments for keeping him—for now. Reaves is a fan favorite and a product of the Lakers’ own development pipeline, with strong internal support. He also fits well alongside James and can help carry the load during the regular season when stars rest.
The Lakers aren’t under immediate pressure to make a move and have until the trade deadline in February to fully assess Reaves’ market value. In the meantime, they can turn their attention to other priorities, such as improving team fitness.
