The Detroit Lions are facing a significant need at edge rusher opposite Aidan Hutchinson as they prepare for the 2025 NFL season.
Following the release of Za’Darius Smith earlier this offseason, Detroit hasn’t addressed the vacancy in free agency and only used a sixth-round draft pick to reinforce the position.
Veteran pass rusher Matt Judon, one of the top remaining free agents at the position, has been linked to the Lions in a projection by CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan. He noted that while Detroit selected defensive tackle Tyleik Williams in the first round and picked Boise State edge rusher Ahmed Hassanein in the sixth, expectations for the latter should be modest. This makes Judon a potential fit.
Judon spent 2024 with the Atlanta Falcons, recording 5.5 sacks—the fewest in any full season since his rookie year. While his age (he turns 33 in August) and a previous biceps injury raise concerns, his reduced production might be explained by that injury.
Regardless of potential decline, Detroit lacks a proven starter across from Hutchinson, and Judon could help fill that gap. With Hutchinson drawing heavy attention, Judon could benefit and possibly bounce back.
Spotrac estimates Judon’s free-agent value at two years for $8.4 million, though a one-year deal is more likely now. Given Detroit couldn’t afford the $11 million Smith was due, Spotrac’s projected $4.2 million per year would be financially manageable for the Lions.
