Sunderland have reportedly submitted a club-record offer worth £52 million for Real Madrid midfielder Brahim Diaz during the current transfer window, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.
Diaz has been part of Real Madrid’s squad for several seasons, but competition for playing time remains fierce. With Jude Bellingham, Arda Güler, Dani Ceballos and Franco Mastantuono all vying for minutes, opportunities have been limited for the 25-year-old this campaign.
Despite his reduced role in Madrid, Diaz’s quality is not in doubt. The Morocco international — who earned his first senior cap for Spain in 2021 before switching allegiance — boasts an impressive international record, scoring 13 goals in 22 appearances. Any club able to secure his signature would be landing a high-calibre attacking talent, with Sunderland now emerging as a surprise contender.

Fichajes claims Real Madrid have received two identical bids of €60 million (£52 million) for Diaz, with one coming from the Black Cats. The proposed deal would include a guaranteed £39 million fee, with a further £13 million in performance-related add-ons, making it an extremely attractive package for the Spanish giants.
With Diaz having featured in just 17 per cent of Real Madrid’s available minutes this season, the club are said to be weighing up their options ahead of a crucial decision in the market.
Sunderland’s interest underlines their ambition, as they are prepared to make Diaz a central figure in their long-term sporting project. The Moroccan playmaker has 18 months remaining on his current contract, which strengthens the possibility of a move away from the Bernabéu.
Although he recently drew headlines for missing a late Panenka penalty in the Africa Cup of Nations final, his overall tournament performances earned high praise, with Morocco’s head coach even suggesting Diaz “can become the best player in the world.”
Should he make the switch to Wearside, Diaz would be expected to assume a leadership role in midfield, supplying attacking threats like Brian Brobbey and helping Sunderland push for a top-half finish. Whether the Black Cats can successfully complete such a blockbuster deal, however, remains to be seen.

Born in Málaga, Diaz began his career at his hometown club before joining Manchester City at just 16. He spent four years in England, making 15 senior appearances, before moving to Real Madrid in search of regular football.
Since then, Diaz has featured 139 times for Los Blancos and enjoyed a successful three-year loan spell at AC Milan, scoring 18 goals in 124 matches. Those numbers suggest he has the pedigree to thrive in the Premier League — particularly within Régis Le Bris’ tactical setup — making him a potential coup for Sunderland.
