Sunderland are reportedly targeting Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Jonas Omlin this January, a move that could significantly aid clubs like West Brom, Queens Park Rangers, and Millwall in their pursuit of Anthony Patterson.
According to Pete O’Rourke, Sunderland have begun discussions with the German club over the potential signing of Swiss goalkeeper Omlin.
The Black Cats previously brought in Dutch goalkeeper Robin Roefs from NEC Nijmegen over the summer to take over from Patterson at The Stadium of Light, leaving Patterson on the bench throughout this season.
Patterson, who played a key role in Sunderland’s promotion last season, has been linked with a move back to the Championship this month. Alan Nixon reported that Leicester City, Southampton, and QPR were among the clubs interested in him, with Millwall later emerging as another potential destination.
Football League World revealed that West Brom have now joined the chase for Patterson. Sunderland’s interest in Omlin could boost the chances of these clubs in securing the English goalkeeper.
West Brom, QPR, and Millwall are all seeking to strengthen their goalkeeping situations. The Baggies, in particular, have struggled defensively. Ryan Mason’s decision to replace Josh Griffiths with Joe Wildsmith didn’t work out, and Eric Ramsay, the new West Brom manager, has since lost his first two games, conceding eight goals, including five at home to Norwich. Patterson’s experience with promotion-winning sides makes him a prime candidate to bring stability to West Brom’s backline.
QPR and Millwall are also keen, as both clubs have faced inconsistency in goal this season. QPR have rotated between Paul Nardi, Ben Hamer, and Joe Walsh in the last four league matches, while Millwall saw Steven Benda recalled from loan and Lukas Jensen sidelined through injury, leaving Max Crocombe as the primary option. Patterson’s arrival would provide these clubs with proven quality and reliability between the posts.
Having been Sunderland’s number one for the last three campaigns, Patterson has been largely sidelined since Roefs’ arrival, making just one appearance this season in the EFL Cup against Huddersfield. At 25, Patterson will want regular playing time to avoid stagnating in his career.
With Sunderland potentially securing Omlin, it seems likely that Patterson will be given the green light to leave, opening the door for several Championship clubs eager to bring him in.
