Newcastle United are actively searching for midfield reinforcements after a disappointing start to the 2025/26 season.
While the Magpies have impressed in European competitions, their Premier League form has fallen short of expectations. Eddie Howe’s men currently sit 14th in the table, only two points above the relegation zone, following consecutive defeats to West Ham United and Brentford.
Balancing Champions League duties with domestic fixtures has proven difficult, and injuries have disrupted squad stability. Full-backs Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall have endured lengthy absences, while summer signings Anthony Elanga and Jacob Ramsey are yet to find their rhythm. Meanwhile, £55 million recruit Yoane Wissa is still waiting to make his debut after sustaining an injury on international duty over two months ago.
Despite their struggles, Newcastle remain confident in their ability to attract top young talent to St. James’ Park. New sporting director Ross Wilson has quickly integrated into the club’s recruitment setup, and according to the Daily Mail, AZ Alkmaar’s Kees Smit has emerged as a leading target.
The Dutch midfielder, who has been a standout performer for AZ, particularly in a recent UEFA Europa Conference League clash with Crystal Palace, is reportedly valued at around £20 million. Both Real Madrid and Barcelona have shown interest, but Newcastle believe their project and clearer route to first-team football could give them an advantage — especially with uncertainty surrounding Sandro Tonali’s future and Joelinton’s dip in form.
Smit, 19, is under contract with AZ until 2028 but is expected to make a move by 2026, reflecting the high regard in which he’s held by top European clubs.
