After an early exit from the playoffs, the Los Angeles Lakers have some key issues to address this offseason. Their lack of frontcourt size and depth was a major factor in their first-round loss to the Timberwolves. While the trio of Austin Reaves, Luka Doncic, and LeBron James is highly skilled offensively, the Lakers might need to reshuffle their roster to improve overall balance — possibly by moving one of those players.
Reaves stands out as the most logical trade asset in that scenario. Set to earn $13.9 million next season on a favorable contract, the 27-year-old will likely command a sizable extension after the 2025-26 season. Given some fit concerns, LA could explore dealing him for a defensive-minded player.
One intriguing trade possibility is acquiring Jabari Smith Jr. from the Houston Rockets. A straight swap of Reaves for Smith could benefit both teams.
Smith, entering his third NBA season, posted averages of 12.2 points, 7 rebounds, and 1.1 assists with shooting splits of 43.8% from the field, 35.4% from three, and 82.5% from the line. He brings defensive versatility, rim protection, and floor spacing, despite his offense being primarily jump-shot reliant. His potential to fill the small-ball center role adds valuable flexibility.
On the other side, the Rockets need more offensive creators. Reaves would represent a clear improvement over Jalen Green, who underperformed in the postseason. Houston could then look to move Green in a separate deal for added perimeter shooting.
The Lakers, in turn, would gain size, defense, and youth in one move. Smith offers more upside than Reaves and plays a more valuable position. Although not a star yet, Smith could help the Lakers become more formidable in the playoffs.
