Following an unimpressive first-round defeat, the Los Angeles Lakers are expected to strengthen their roster to match superstars Luka Doncic and LeBron James.
Among these possibilities is the prospect of relocating fan favorite Austin Reaves, who had a breakout year in his fourth season with the organization. However, Reaves’ performance necessitates a significant deal next summer. The Lakers also require a primary ball-handler, given that Reaves and Doncic play in the similar style, demanding the ball in their hands.
According to one sportsbook, the Miami Heat (+400) are the favorites to acquire Reaves, along with the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers.
Aside from dumping Reaves for contractual reasons, this deal makes little sense for either team. Miami has the point guard the Lakers require, and having Reaves in the lineup would be of little use to the Heat. He’s not a significant upgrade over Herro to propel them closer to championship contention, and pairing him with Herro would create the same issue as Reaves in Los Angeles.
Lakers supporters considered a trade if they could obtain Bam Adebayo, which is exceedingly unlikely under Heat president Pat Riley.
The Clippers are a better fit for the budding star, as they may look for a shooting guard following another James Harden postseason underperformance.
