Cowboys Officially Ink Potential Starting Running Back Jaydon Blue
The Dallas Cowboys have officially signed Jaydon Blue, a dynamic running back from the University of Texas, to a four-year contract worth $4.267 million, including a $427,068 signing bonus, according to ESPN. The move has been met with enthusiasm from fans, who had long been waiting for the team to address its running back depth.
Though the Cowboys held off until Day 3 of the NFL Draft, they snagged Blue with the 149th overall pick in the fifth round. The pick, considered a steal by many, especially since Dallas reportedly considered trading into the fourth round to get him, adds serious speed and versatility to the backfield.
Dallas wasn’t done, either—they added Clemson’s bruising runner Phil Mafah in the seventh round, creating a four-man competition heading into training camp. Blue and Mafah will be joined by free-agent signings Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders as they vie for the starting role.
Despite being a later-round selection, Blue is viewed highly within the organization. Scouts ranked him among the top three running backs in this year’s class, just behind Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty and UNC’s Omarion Hampton. His combination of speed—highlighted by a 4.38 40-yard dash—and receiving ability (over 500 receiving yards in his final two college seasons) makes him a great fit in new head coach Brian Schottenheimer’s offense.
While Blue needs to refine his ball security and toughness, he has the potential to emerge as the Cowboys’ lead back. With his contract now signed, he’s ready to compete—and possibly surprise—as a rookie starter in 2025.
