Kyle Busch currently holds 63 NASCAR Cup Series victories, placing him ninth on the all-time leaderboard. He trails Dale Earnhardt Sr., who is next on the list, by 13 wins.
During a conversation with Denny Hamlin on the Actions Detrimental podcast, Busch admitted that he had always hoped to match Earnhardt’s record, especially during his time with Richard Childress Racing. However, he acknowledged that reaching that milestone is likely out of reach at this point in his career.
Instead, Busch has shifted his focus to a different dream—racing alongside his son, Brexton. Busch expressed his desire to remain in the sport long enough to share a Truck Series ride with Brexton, who just turned 10. If everything goes according to plan, Brexton would be eligible to compete in short-track events when he turns 16. Busch envisions staying competitive for at least four more years, extending his career to age 44. Ideally, he’d like to stretch that to five more years, perfectly aligning with Brexton’s racing timeline.
“If I got four more years, let’s just say, 44, if I got four more left… I’d like to run five more because that would put me in the bracket of age for then Brexton, and then what all happens…” Busch explained. He added that surpassing 70 Cup Series victories would be a satisfying way to cap off his career.
Having just turned 40, Busch is clearly planning his career around the opportunity to race with his son. He envisions the possibility of partnering with a strong team where they could even pursue an owner’s championship together—a rare and sentimental achievement in the sport.
Busch also spoke candidly about the current state of NASCAR, specifically the unpredictability brought by the NextGen car and chaotic race finishes. “With the world we live in with this NextGen car and racing and everyone wrecking on final restarts and all this BS, if you can have a three or four race-win season and make it to the Championship 8, that is a good season,” he stated. Busch described advancing to the Championship 4 as “icing on the cake,” and winning the title as the ultimate celebration, symbolized by “blowing out the candle.”
For Busch, the future holds more than just chasing records; it’s about creating memories on the track with his son and possibly sharing the thrill of competition as teammates.
