Since the Carolina Panthers dismissed veteran outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney on Thursday, speculation regarding his next destination has dominated the NFL airwaves. Lions supporters were not alone in wanting their team to sign the three-time Pro Bowler.
At the same time, not all Lions fans agreed with the concept of signing Clowney. While most supporters agree that Detroit’s pass rush needs to improve, some are concerned about the financial aspects of a transaction and the cultural fit. Given the possibility of Za’Darius Smith returning to Detroit, one has to wonder if signing Clowney makes sense.
Even if Za’Darius Smith does not return to Detroit, the Lions may still have a better alternative than Clowney. Matthew Judon, one of the top remaining pass rushers in free agency, would be a better choice than Clowney.

Despite being an effective defender late in his career, Clowney remains a journeyman. Since his time with the Texans, Clowney has overstayed his welcome in a number of cities. The Panthers were the 32-year-old player’s fifth squad in six seasons. He had a high-profile exit from Cleveland after criticizing the Browns for his involvement.
Given that no NFL team prioritizes culture more than Dan Campbell and the Lions, it’s unclear whether Clowney would be a good fit.
Even though Clowney had a much better season last year, Matt Judon might be the best option for the Lions. The former Ravens and Patriots captain had a poor 2024 season after being moved to the Falcons before the season. He still managed to accumulate 5.5 sacks, 9 quarterback hits, and seven tackles for loss. He’d also likely be on a more team-friendly contract. Detroit should strongly consider chasing Judon instead.
