Vikings Reportedly Disappointed Over Daniel Jones’ Departure
The Minnesota Vikings appeared to have their quarterback succession plan in place when they signed Daniel Jones midseason after his release from the New York Giants, despite his former $100 million contract. Jones was expected to serve as a backup to Sam Darnold and compete with first-round pick J.J. McCarthy during training camp.
However, things did not go according to plan. In March, Jones opted to sign with the Indianapolis Colts, leaving the Vikings unexpectedly searching for a veteran quarterback to support McCarthy. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, who spoke on “The Ross Tucker Podcast” on May 7, there may have been lingering tension between Jones and the Vikings over his departure.
Pelissero revealed that Minnesota initially believed Jones would return, but sensed late in the process that his commitment to rejoining the team was shaky. Ultimately, Jones chose the Colts, accepting slightly less guaranteed money for a clearer path to playing time. His decision was influenced by Indianapolis’ quarterback situation, where Anthony Richardson struggled during his first two seasons and was benched last year. With a more open competition in Indianapolis, Jones saw an opportunity to claim the starting role.
The Vikings, feeling blindsided by Jones’ decision, reacted by pulling their offer entirely, according to Pelissero. Minnesota’s approach, Pelissero explained, was straightforward: if a player isn’t committed to being part of their system, the team won’t force it.
Jones’ departure left the Vikings scrambling for a veteran presence, briefly entertaining the idea of bringing in Aaron Rodgers. However, negotiations fell through as Rodgers was only interested in a starting role. Minnesota eventually traded back in the fifth round of the draft to acquire Sam Howell, solidifying their quarterback room for the upcoming season.
