After beginning the season with the Brooklyn Nets, former No. 1 overall pick Ben Simmons joined the Los Angeles Clippers via a contract buyout. Now that the Clippers’ season has ended, Simmons is expected to enter unrestricted free agency this summer.
At 28 years old, Simmons still offers some on-court value, which could attract interest from a few teams during the offseason. Recent reports suggest that the defending champions, the Boston Celtics, might be a realistic destination for him.
The Celtics are likely facing some tough roster decisions this offseason to maintain financial flexibility, which could include targeting affordable players like Simmons. According to Bovada Sportsbook, Boston is the frontrunner (+400 odds) to sign the Australian forward if he doesn’t return to the Clippers.
Though Simmons is no longer the player he was when he won Rookie of the Year in 2018—beating out Jayson Tatum, who placed third—his versatility and defensive skills still make him an intriguing fit in Boston. However, his lack of a three-point shot may be a concern for a team like the Celtics. Even so, his ability to add depth and defend multiple positions could make him a valuable, cost-effective addition to their roster.
