D.J. Reed Joins the Detroit Lions on a New Contract
Although the New York Jets fell short of their 2024 offseason expectations, D.J. Reed had an impressive season. Starting in 14 games, the seasoned cornerback finished with 11 passes defended, one sack, 64 tackles, four tackles for loss, and a 70.7 PFF grade, ranking 31st out of 118 eligible players. Despite Reed’s strong performance and the return of a healthy Aaron Rodgers, the Jets failed to make the playoffs and ended the season with one of the NFL’s worst records.
D.J. Reed entered the NFL as a fifth-round pick in the 2018 Draft, selected by the San Francisco 49ers. However, the Kansas State product struggled to establish himself with the team, spending much of his first two seasons on the bench before being waived ahead of the 2020 season. Reed then signed with the Seattle Seahawks, where he quickly became a key figure in the secondary. In 2020, he played in 10 games, starting 8, recording two interceptions, seven passes defended, 62 tackles, two tackles for loss, and a 75.2 PFF grade.
Reed proved his success wasn’t a one-off in 2021, putting together another strong season, which earned him a new contract with the New York Jets. He joined Robert Saleh’s team in 2022 and finished the season with one interception, 80 tackles, and one tackle for loss.
Over his career since signing his rookie contract, D.J. Reed has played in 101 games, starting 70. During his time on the field, he has totaled six interceptions, 51 passes defended, two sacks, 414 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and two quarterback hits. Despite these impressive stats, Reed has never been selected to the Pro Bowl or named to an All-Pro team.
